Let’s turn the page on illiteracy in Canada As Canadians, we have a lot to be proud of – a beautiful country to call home, a welcoming and diverse collection of citizens, and a respected reputation around the world. But there is one area that we can improve upon. More and more children in Canada are growing up without books to learn about the country in which they live, the places they have yet to go, and the worlds that only exist in the imagination. A crisis in our schools A 2010 Ipsos Reid survey commissioned by the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation reveals that with reductions in library funding, almost a quarter of surveyed parents say that their school fundraises to support their library. However, high-needs schools in low-income neighbourhoods often don’t have the ability to raise adequate funds so their need for new books grows greater every year. Our response Over the past decades provincial funding has decreased; budgets that once provided for one child in the 1970’s, are now expected to provide for nine children. This lack of funding leads many teachers and principals to spend an average of $1,000 of their own money every year – $140 million across the country – to buy up-to-date books and learning materials for their students. The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation was established to address this challenge. Let’s give all children an equal chance at learning and success.
