personalities n Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I., appointed Michael P. Carey, PhD, as director of the Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine. Carey, who founded Syracuse University’s Center for Carey Health and Behavior, will oversee the hospital’s research on tobacco cessation, physical activity, cancer survival and HIV/AIDS prevention programs. n The International Association of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome presented its 2011 Perpich Award to leonard A. Jason, PhD, of DePaul University, for his 20 years of research on chronic fatigue syndrome. Jason is the first psychologist to earn the annual award. n Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine has named David Mohr, PhD, director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies, a new multi– disciplinary center that Mohr harnesses Web88 based and wireless technologies for behavioral interventions promoting physical and mental health. Mohr joined the university in 2006 as a tenured professor in the department of preventive medicine. n The Massachusetts Senate appointed Sara orozco, PhD, to the Massachusetts Health Disparities Council. Orozco is a professor at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology and she will strive to elevate mental health within the council’s mission to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities in the state. n The President’s Commission on White House Fellowships named Wizdom Powell, PhD, as one of its 2011–12 White House fellows. Powell, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health, will work in the U.S. Department of Defense for the fellowship, which is a yearlong leadership and education program that promotes civil service and interest in policymaking. n The State University of New York at Potsdam presented psychology professor Arlene Stillwell, PhD, with a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service for her talent in balancing teaching and service. Stillwell chairs the psychology department and was the faculty adviser for seven years to Phi Eta Sigma, a national freshman honor society, and advised the psychology honors society, Psi Chi, for 13 years. Powell n The British Academy and Wiley Publishing Co. presented developmental psychologist Michael tomasello, PhD, with the 2011 Wiley Prize in Psychology for his research on the cognitive and cultural qualities that distinguish humans from great apes. Tomasello co-directs the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. n The International Commission on Illumination presented Jennifer veitch, PhD, with its Waldram Gold Pin Award for Applied Illuminating Engineering for her research on how lighting affects Veitch behavior and health.
