Kennedy served in the Army from 1987 to 1993. She then earned a journalism degree in 2007 and began writing about post-traumatic stress disorder while working as an embedded journalist for the Army Times in Baghdad that same year with Charlie Company’s 26th Infantry Regiment. She detailed her time with that unit, which lost 14 men in Iraq, and recounted how soldiers coped with combat stress in the Army Times series “Blood Brothers.” She expanded the articles into the 2010 book “They Fought for Each Other: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Hardest Hit Unit in Iraq.” She continues to write about trauma and health issues at USA Today. “She is a credit to her profession, writing about soldiers’ actual experiences with trauma and PTSD in a way that the average person can understand,” says Pauline Wallin, PhD, Div. 46 president. The award spotlights journalism that broadens the public’s understanding of psychology and its connection to everyday life, says Elizabeth Carll, PhD, founder and chair of the division’s News Media, Public Education and Public Policy Committee, which launched the award in 2002. “It is important to recognize that the news has enormous reach and influence to create change in the public’s perception of psychological information,” says Carll. Carll and Wallin gave Kennedy the award at APA’s 2011 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. The division also honored 2010 winner Melissa Healy, a science and health writer for The Los Angeles Times who was unable to accept her award during APA’s 2010 Annual Convention in San Diego. —J.
