The Committee makes suggestions for other committees of the Society that may benefit from having international members, provides input on ASH’s scientific and educational programs, and oversees many of ASH’s global initiatives. One of the programs guided by the IMC is the Visitor Training Program (VTP), which provides clinical and laboratory training opportunities to hematology-related professionals from developing countries. Each year, the Committee selects the strongest candidates from a long list of impressive and varied applicants. Although the training must conclude within 12 weeks, the process to prepare for this training and the subsequent implementation of skills and techniques at the trainee’s home institution is an ongoing process which requires personal guidance and direction from an IMC mentor. In this way, individual members of the IMC have helped to ensure the success and continued growth of this program. The IMC also supervises the International Outreach Initiative (IOI), a program that has grown significantly since its inception in 2006. The IOI distributes educational materials to health-care and research institutions in developing countries. The IMC determines how to best reach potential IOI recipients as well as which educational materials will have the greatest impact on their institutions. The IMC plays an important role in guiding the efforts of ASH’s international collaborations as well. For several years, ASH has partnered with Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) to develop hematology-specific training programs in the developing world, with current sites in Cambodia, Peru, and Uganda. The IMC oversees this relationship, which continues to evolve as new volunteers from the field of hematology are recruited and the program continues to expand to new sites based on specific training needs. The Committee also manages ASH’s administration of the International Consortium on Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (IC-APL), an educational initiative that brings together clinicians and researchers from developing countries to implement a registry trial based on the standard of care for the treatment of APL. Based on the initial success of the IC-APL, its governing body has recently voted to expand the collaborative model to address other subtypes of acute leukemia, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). To reflect this change, the cooperative group is now called the International Consortium on Acute Leukemia (ICAL). A partnership with the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Office of Latin American Program Development (OLAPD) to facilitate clinical research collaborations for Latin American investigators with the goal of improving patient care has recently become operational. The collaboration between ASH, NCI, and La Agrupación Mexicana para el Estudio de la Hematología (AMEH) is an educational effort to enhance clinical management and research for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by advancing cytogenetic analysis. The IMC provides oversight and consultation for this important new international initiative. 2011 Abstract Achievement Award Recipients ach year, the American Society of Hematology offers meritbased Abstract Achievement Awards in the amount of $500 to select individuals to acknowledge the accomplishments of hematologists in training. This year’s Abstract Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students, resident physicians, and postdoctoral fellows who are both first author and presenter of an abstract. The 2011 ASH Abstract Achievement Awards are sponsored in part by the following: All Cells, LLC Amgen Inc. Wallace H.
