In special recognition of the critical role research has had in advancing the field of transplantation, NMDP partnered with ASH to provide $25,000 to the highest-scoring abstracts in 10 categories at the 2011 ASH Annual Meeting. The award categories range from biology to transplant to post-transplant care and health services research, a fact that Dr. Armand Keating, ASH president-elect, commends. “I appreciate the diverse selection of the categories. They are not just restricted to transplant, but rather the broader scope of the management of diseases treated by transplantation.” NMDP has demonstrated a significant commitment to advancing T IN THIS SECTION Mentor Award B-4 Trainee Events B-6 Clinical Research Training Institute B-8 Scholar Awards B-22 Getting Around San Diego B-36 vital research since its inception in 1987. NMDP, with its research arm Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), collaborates with the global scientific community, including organizations like ASH, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT), and the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN), to lead and support research efforts. Tremendous strides have been made in clinical care, including improved DNA-based tissue typing, expanded knowledge of immunobiology, and better supportive care strategies. Dr. Keating agrees. “The field of unrelated donor transplantation has made remarkable progress. It is the result of many people contributing to the field. NMDP is such a dedicated organization and, together with partners like the CIBMTR, has really moved the field forward.” As outcomes for unrelated transplants near outcomes for those patients with HLA-matched siblings, patient selection has seen dramatic changes in recent years. “Advances in transplantation science have directly contributed to life-saving treatments for a growing number of patients,” Dr. Jeffrey W. Chell, chief executive officer, NMDP, said. “Transplants for many diseases are increasing, and today patients over age 50 are the most rapidly expanding group.” Looking forward, ASH and NMDP will continue research to improve transplant outcomes.
