Immaculée Ilibagiza Carolyn Lamm, ’70 Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium Buffalo State’s renowned Art Conservation Department celebrated the successful completion of the match portion of its Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant with a reception in September. The $2.65 million secured through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant is being used to fund an endowed chair in conservation science, expand research opportunities, and purchase leading-edge scientific instrumentation. Buffalo State’s Great Lakes Center added a new johnboat to the research fleet housed at its field station on Buffalo’s waterfront. The new boat, which is especially useful on rivers and small lakes, joins a fleet of 11 other vessels and Boston Whalers used by Buffalo State researchers and faculty members. Visitors from across the region brought their treasured, but damaged paintings to campus for the Buffalo State Paintings Conservation Clinic in Rockwell Hall. James F. Hamm, professor of art conservation, discussed each painting's history, condition, and proposed treatment. Several works remained with the department for treatment and study. Buffalo State presented the second annual Anne Frank Project, a gathering of speakers, artists, scientists, and writers, to celebrate the life and wisdom of Anne Frank. With a theme of Our Shared Humanity, the event included workshops, panel discussions, and theater and dance performances. Immaculée Ilibagiza, author and survivor of the Rwandan genocide; Carl Wilkens, former head of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency International in Rwanda; and Cherie R. Brown, founder and executive director of the National Coalition Building Institute, served as keynote speakers. OCTOBER Buffalo State celebrated the opening of its new Dr. Margaret Eschner Bacon Student Gallery with a dedication ceremony in Upton Hall on October 25. Bacon, ’41, a longtime supporter of the university, recently donated $300,000 to furnish the first-floor space, which will be devoted exclusively to the display of student art. In addition, a portion of the funds from the gift will be used to bring noted artists to campus to share their insights with students. Carolyn Lamm, ’70, immediate past president of the American Bar Association (ABA) and a partner and international arbitration, litigation, and trade lawyer in the Washington, D.C., office of the global law firm White & Case LLP, visited campus on October 25. She presented a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar at the Burchfield Penney Art Center and later met with Buffalo State pre-law students. Buffalo State’s Great Lakes Center received three grants totaling $1.7 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. All three grant projects are collaborations among the center’s research scientists and Buffalo State faculty members, as well as researchers from other institutions. The largest grant provides $972,583 to fund a Lake Erie ice cover data project headed by Charlotte Roehm, research scientist with the center and assistant professor of geography and planning. The 11th annual Faculty and Staff Research and Creativity Fall Forum took place on October 28. With more than a hundred participants, the forum represented the wide range of research conducted at Buffalo State. The Refugee Awareness Project, a weeklong program held in October, included “Refugee Stories,” an event in E. H. Butler Library featuring a panel of refugees from six countries; a marketplace of organizations with volunteer and service-learning opportunities; a faculty discussion of connections to curriculum; and a day of service with refugee communities. A Buffalo State delegation visited several cities in China to explore opportunities for new academic collaborations between Buffalo State and Chinese universities. Benjamin Christy, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities; Mark Severson, dean of the School of Natural and Social Sciences; Kevin Mulcahy, interim dean of the School of the Professions; John Siskar, interim associate vice president for teacher education; and Ted Turkle, director of the Research Foundation, were accompanied by faculty members Lin Xia Jiang, professor of fine arts; Tao Tang, associate professor of geography and planning; and Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies. 13 ANNUAL REPORT 2010–2011
