A new memo of understanding between Buffalo State and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society (BECHS) took effect on January 1. Under the agreement, collaborative opportunities such as the sharing of space, facilities, and archival resources; library services and digitization; and joint grant applications, publications, and other development and fundraising opportunities will be explored. Buffalo State announced the implementation of the Buffalo State Challenge, a unique partnership between the campus and two local high schools—McKinley High School and Oracle Charter School. The challenge provides aspiring students guaranteed admission to Buffalo State and a four-year scholarship award for those who meet specific academic benchmarks by the time they graduate from high school. Other featured components of the challenge include a five-part workshop series on goal development and college planning, regular visits to the school by a Buffalo State admissions representative, professional development opportunities for school staff, and student participation in campus and community cultural events. Volunteers at Buffalo State offered free tax-preparation services to individuals and families of Western New York with annual gross incomes of less than $50,000. Buffalo State was one of eight sites partnering with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County’s Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH) coalition to offer free tax services in 2011. “Buffalo State Loves Cotton,” a project backed by a $25,630 grant from Cotton Incorporated, inspired students in the fashion and textile technology program to design fabrics and t-shirt graphics around the theme “Buffalo Loves Cotton.” Designs depicted the story of the City of Buffalo (including the bison, the 1901 PanAmerican Exposition, the waterfront, and local architecture) and were included in the Cotton Parkway, Nautical Cotton, and Organic Optimism collections. The Anne Frank Project earned a special Community Leader Award from the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York. Launched in 2009, the project has brought international speakers, multimedia presentations, and interactive workshops to campus. Sponsored and coordinated by the Theater Department, this symposium grew out of Buffalo State’s 2006 production of The Diary of Anne Frank. F E B R U A RY The Physics Department received a $750,000 Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant is funding a scholarship and stipend program from January 2011 through December 2015. This Phase II Noyce grant follows a successful Phase I Noyce grant for nearly $500,000. The combined funding of $1.2 million supports undergraduate and graduate students who are studying to become math and science teachers in high-needs schools. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a $250,000 grant to the Art Conservation Department to provide fellowships. Beneficiaries included students accepted into the highly selective master’s program in fall 2011. Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies at Buffalo State, received a three-year, $1.1 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to conduct his second major study of suicide in rural China. His first study, which was funded by the NIMH for more than $1 million, ended in 2009. Pixita del Prado Hill, associate professor of elementary education and reading, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile, for the spring 2011 semester. Her work supported Chile’s Ministry of Education’s goal of English proficiency for all Chileans by working with teacher candidates in the English education program at Universidad Mayor. Buffalo State hosted the American Mock Trial Association’s 2011 Great Lakes Regional Tournament on February 26 and 27. During the competition, schools from Western and Central New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio competed to win a bid for the American Mock Trial Association’s National Championship Tournament in May. Nearly 300 students participated in the regional tournament. 15 Anne Frank Project Noyce Physics Grant ANNUAL REPORT 2010–2011
