M AY The Buffalo State College Japan Relief Group, along with the Japanese Group of Buffalo and the Japanese Student Association of the University at Buffalo, hosted Sakura Walk on May 1 in Delaware Park. All proceeds from the event benefited Japanese tsunami victims through the American Red Cross. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo brought his statewide “People First” campaign to Buffalo State on May 12. The governor delivered his message of ethics reform, a property tax cap, and marriage equality to a capacity audience in the Warren Enters Theatre in Upton Hall. Buffalo State conferred degrees on more than 1,900 undergraduate and 650 graduate students during its 139th Commencement celebration on May 14 in the Sports Arena. The President’s Distinguished Service Award was presented to John T. and Susan Hoskins. Distinguished Alumnus Awards were granted to Stephen V. Musolino, ’76, certified health physicist with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Bob Williams, ’79, vice president of communications for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Stephanie N. Berberick, Kathryn S. Boughton, Christopher R. Guidarelli, Watoii T. Rabii, and Justin L. Wojcik were honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Buffalo State was named to the 2010 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in recognition of its strong commitment to volunteerism, service learning, and civic engagement. Buffalo State’s Volunteer and Service-Learning Center handled the application process for the award, identifying 100,693 hours of volunteer work in the Western New York community by students, faculty, and staff in 2010. Kaitlyn Beachner, a graduate student in the Higher Education Administration Department, was elected president of the SUNY Student Assembly. Student leaders from across the SUNY system convened at the SUNY Student Assembly Conference to elect their leadership team for the 2011–2012 academic year. Beachner will serve as president of the assembly for a 12-month term that started on June 1, 2011. She is the first Buffalo State student to hold the position of SUNY Student Assembly president. Commencement JUNE A new graduate program—master of public administration (M.P.A.) in public and nonprofit management—was approved and began accepting students for fall 2011. The new program, administered by the Political Science Department, provides students with the skills necessary to be highly effective managers in the public and not-for-profit sectors. The program offers two tracks: one in public administration and a second in nonprofit administration. Drew Kahn, professor and chair of the Theater Department, received the Toby Ticktin Back Award from the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo on June 6. The award is given annually to an individual who has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in Holocaust education. Kahn is the founder and director of Buffalo State’s annual Anne Frank Project. Reunion 2011, held on campus in June, honored the classes of 1951 and 1961 and continued the 50-Plus Club tradition. The Class of 1951 enjoyed brunch in the E. H. Butler Library Rooftop Garden and Butler Room, while the Class of 1961 met for a cocktail reception and dinner in the Martin House Complex’s Greatbatch Pavilion. Two Buffalo State faculty members received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching: Gary S. Solar, associate professor and chair of Earth Sciences and Science Education, and Amitra A. Wall, associate professor in the Sociology Department. The award recognizes faculty members for consistently superior professional achievement and the ongoing pursuit of excellence. Buffalo State College Foundation chair Linda A. Dobmeier, ’71, acknowledged recipients of the 2011 Chair’s Recognition Award during the foundation’s annual meeting on June 16. Honorees were Bruce Fox, photography and graphics coordinator at Buffalo State; Dorothy Pieniadz, ’45, who recently established the Dorothy Mierzwa Pieniadz Endowed Scholarship Fund; the Barnes & Noble at Buffalo State Bookstore; and the Joseph R. Takats Foundation. Buffalo State introduced a new undergraduate criminal justice minor in intelligence analysis. The minor, consisting of 12 required credits and 9 elective credits, provides a structured framework for students interested in pursuing analyst careers in government intelligence, military intelligence, or law enforcement. 17 Community Service Honor Roll ANNUAL REPORT 2010–2011
