MESSAGE FROM THE BUFFALO STATE COLLEGE Foundation 24 A S A F I R S T- G E N E R AT I O N S T U D E N T AT B U F F A L O S TAT E , I was attracted by its educational programs and affordable tuition. Years later, as chair of the Buffalo State College Foundation, I am still attracted by its educational excellence and financial accessibility; however, providing a quality education is not an inexpensive undertaking. Today, Buff State students pay more than $7,353 a year for tuition, fees, and books. More than 80 percent of our students receive some type of financial aid. In 2010-2011, scholarships provided more than $1.4 million in assistance to students who otherwise would not have been able to attend college. This support is critical if our graduates are to compete in the twenty-first-century economy. In addition to our world-renowned art conservation program and the teacher education programs for which Buffalo State is so well known, the university also offers a wide selection of undergraduate and graduate programs. From criminal justice to creative studies; fashion and textile technology to forensic science; hospitality and tourism to professional applied and computational mathematics—it’s safe to say we’re “not just your father’s college anymore!” Our alumni have won Emmys and Oscars and have served as chair of the American Bar Association, as a member of the Federal Reserve Board, and as a member of the U.S. Congress. They have studied tsunami effects in Japan and the effects of invasive species and pollution on our own Lake Erie; they live on the other side of the world, and right across the street. The fulfillment of these dreams—and many more—would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors. Your gifts make a direct and immediate impact on our students, our programs, and our communities. With eager students, accomplished and passionate faculty members, and the generous financial assistance of caring alumni and friends, Buffalo State will continue its mission of providing high-quality, affordable education.
