Far West Skier's Guide 2011-2012 - (Page 20)

The race challenge is a popular activity on ski weeks. It is a wonderful way to meet others on the trip, as well as improve your skiing abilities. photos: Ken Calkins FWRA Board of Directors 2O11 - 2O12 President: Bob Ellis (530) 414-4270 rellis9681@aol.com Secretary: Open at time of publication Financial Officer: Nancy Ellis (530) 582.0566 nancyellis2@sbcglobal.net Rules Chairman: Bob Warzynski (775) 266-3976 bwarz@linkline.com FWRA Committee Chairs: Webmaster: George Stewart (559) 734-9294 gwstewart@prodigy.net Competition Chairman: Jim Sommer (775) 322-5805 sommerskier@aol.com FWRA Championships 2012: George Eachus (949) 493-8738 geachus@cox.net L Racing into 2012 by Bob Ellis President - FWRA Looking forward to 2012, we are having the Far West Championships at Mammoth Mountain on April 6-8, 2012. Please put this date on your calendar, as we are expecting on having a great time competing on Fascination and Andy’s Gold for the Gold. This is a great time to visit Mammoth Mountain and experience the huge variety of slopes and runs around the mountain. Discounted lift tickets and lodging will be available. The Championship weekend will include race clinics and pacesetter races on Friday, the slalom races on Saturday on Fascination and Andy’s Gold, and the Giant Slalom races on Sunday probably on Terry’s and Fascination. On Saturday night, we will have our Awards Banquet for the slalom and the Silent Auction, so bring your checkbook and take advantage of the great items available at the auction. In 2011, we received tremendous snowfall from February through June, which did cause some cancelled races and challenging racing conditions for some races. In 2012, we are looking forward to a more normal snowfall and hopefully more consistent snow conditions. The SoCals will once again be at Mammoth Mountain, with the date yet to be finalized, probably in mid-March, while in Northern California, the NorCals will also be in mid-March at Alpine Meadows.. This year, the FWSA Ski Week will be at Jackson Hole, Wyoming on January 28 - February 4, 2012. We plan on having some fun filled mountain events along with some great racing. Jackson Hole has a long and interesting NASTAR course which we plan on using for the Qualifier Race and the Council Challenge Races. After the races, we will probably see you quenching your thirst in one of the local bars. The top of the mountain has some fantastic bowl skiing, so don’t miss the bowls while you are there. Remember, Far West Racing is set up so anybody can compete with us on skis or snowboards. We have four age groups in every skill class, and 11 skill classes all separated by sex. Women go first in every skill class and older racers also go first in each group. If you haven’t tried racing and you always wanted to, there is no better time than the present. Contact one of your local clubs or race leagues and give racing a shot, or give it a try at FWSA Ski Week. Not only is racing fun for all ages and abilities, it also helps you improve your skiing or boarding skills. Additional information is on the racing website at www.fwra.com. We look forward to seeing you on one of the many hills we race on in Oregon, California, Nevada or Wyoming. 20 Far West Skier’s Guide 2O11 - 2O12 / See the Digital Edition of the Far West Skier’s Guide at www.fwsa.org. http://www.fwra.com http://www.fwsa.org
