The FWSA 2011 Convention Special Guests included Steve Bellamy (The Ski Channel and The Tennis Channel founder), Billy Kidd (1964 Olympic Slalom Silver Medalist), Warren Asa (10th Mountain Division, 86-G veteran), Bruce Campbell (10th Mountain Division, 86-I, M veteran and Southern California Chapter President of 10th Mountain Division Association Inc.); Troy Hawks (National Ski Areas Association Journal Editor), Howard Koch (10th Mountain Division, 86-C veteran, National Historian & former Southern California Chapter President of 10th Mountain Division Association Inc.), Dave Ludwig (founder of American Cancer Society Hope On the Slopes program), Chuck Morse (former Executive Director Far West Division USSA, and former VP Director Marketing Snowbird, former Western States Managing Director Sales and Marketing Vail/ Beaver Creek).

During Saturday’s Luncheon, Troy Hawks, Communications Manager for the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), gave a presentation highlighting the latest news as it relates to the U.S. ski industry, including season-ending statistics and current efforts to grow the sport. Last season, the ski industry set a new visitation record with 60.54 million visits. Also some 75,000 ski and snowboard lessons were given during the month of January, as part of the grass-roots Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month initiative. This January, organizers have set a goal of getting 150,000 people to sign up for lessons. In the multimedia presentation on Saturday afternoon Steve Bellamy talked about the challenges of founding The Ski Channel and The Tennis Channel.
He has produced, directed, written and hosted numerous television shows and films. The film he recently wrote, produced and directed entitled “The Story” about a diverse group of people who have devoted their lives to the mountains, is garnering critical awards and is being pushed through the Academy Award nomination process. Steve played an edit of some of the recent accolades of the film “The Story”, humorous end credits, and a very moving “Hope” segment from the film with the story of 5 time Paralympic Medalist (2010 SG/GS/SL, 2006 SL, 2002 DH) and 2007 Overall World Cup Paralympic Champion skier Stephani Victor (www.youtube.com/watch?v =-_SDspgNrcQ). Stephani said “My story is a story of a human being willing to take some chances and to dare to dream. Don’t wait a second more. Go out and do what’s in your heart.” Bellamy said the model for the Ski Channel website is the Huffington Post model with
