Scott Bowker, VP Public Affairs and Richard Lubin, Safety Committee Chair, look on. photo by David Cooper/Bad Boy’z Photography FWSA Safety Person of the Year - 2011 G o r d o n C a r d o n a Sponsored by Aspen Skiing Company with lodging provided by The Gant & Crestwood Resort Condominiums by Richard Lubin Safety Committee Chair, FWSA Gordon Cardona won the FWSA Safety Person of the Year Award 2011 for his wide range of safety activities including assisting with teaching new adaptive ski instructors with bi-ski safety and hand signals, publishing safety articles, presenting about ski safety at many classes at Cal State Fullerton, emphasizing ski safety on all club ski trips, and assisting with on-mountain adaptive ski clinics while emphasizing safety. Gordon is a disabled skier who uses a sit-ski and is currently the Membership Director of The Unrecables (Los Angeles chapter of Disabled Sports USA). Gordon served on the Board of Directors at EmpowerTech (formally Computer Access Center) in Los Angeles since October 1994. He has assisted with its fundraiser events, programs, and daily operations. EmpowerTech is a non-profit, consumer-based resource center serving the assistive technology needs for people with disabilities in our community. During his college career, he was first a member of an active student organization; then was elected President of this organization at California State University, Los Angeles. Gordon organized activities, fund-raiser events, and functions for this organization and the student body. Besides snow skiing, Gordon enjoys playing power soccer, water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing, river rafting, swimming, basically anything outdoors. He also likes to travel and take cruises around the world! He is thinking about sky-diving sometime. The purpose of the FWSA Safety Person of the Year sponsored by Aspen Skiing Company is to recognize the person who shows safety leadership by doing the most to effectively promote snowsports safety awareness. The winner receives a 6 day vacation for two from Aspen Skiing Company including 6 days of lift tickets for all four mountains (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass), 6 days of rentals and a half day group lesson for two. Seven nights of lodging is provided by The Crestwood Condominiums and The Gant, plus round trip air. The veterans held the Saturday afternoon Public Affairs panel spellbound with their stories from the Division’s Italian campaign in 1944-45. They were honored at the Saturday Honors Banquet. The Association’s 34 Tenth Mountain Division Association and Veterans Were in Action at the 2011 FWSA Convention. History program was the beneficiary of a cache of “Mountain” hockey jerseys, sweatshirts and ball caps donated by Bruce Campbell. All were auctioned by Donn Bryant and John Watson to benefit the History Program. Mike Rogers, Arizona Council President was the big buyer along with Linda Coxen. One member bought a ball cap for her grandfather, a World War II veteran.
