Far West Skier's Guide 2011-2012 - (Page 40)

T This is the first year of the FWSA “Community Service Awareness Program”. Our eleven councils were challenged to have each of their clubs involved with at least one charitable organization by the 2011 FWSA Convention. This was a very positive experience, and our councils encouraged their clubs to make community involvement a priority with their membership, a priority right after skiing, of course! Congratulations to our two winning councils: San Diego Council and Arizona Council. Both councils received the “almost 100%” award, since more than 80% of their clubs were involved with charitable activities. FWSA’s aim for this year is to reach 100% involvement with charities by Convention 2012! Keep up the great work to reach this goal! This was our fifth year of the other very important community service program within the FWSA family: “Charity & Community Service Recognition”. At the FWSA Convention in June, this annual recognition was awarded to Monterey Ski & Social Club of Bay Area Council. The other two finalist groups, who were also asked to present a photo display of their wonderful charity activities, were Action Ski & Snowboard Club of San Diego Council and the Bay Area Snow Sports Council. Three other clubs were also recognized for their charity and community service involvement: Castro Valley Ski Club of BAC, Torrey Pines Ski Club and Off Your Rockers, both of SDCSC. Monterey Ski & Social Club received a FWSA $100 check to go to one of their many favorite charities, Alliance on Aging. With just under 100 members, MSSC seems to thrive on volunteer activities. It’s easy to see why this club has received this special FWSA recognition for the second time. This past year, MSSC has supported these very lucky organizations: the Monterey Food Bank, Alzheimer’s Association, Operation Christmas Cheer, Christmas in the Adobes, the Monterey Sea Otter Classic, the Concours d’Elegance and, the Monterey Beer Classic; the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament at Pebble Beach; the Pebble Beach Food & Wine 40 The Unrecables winners: Gordon Cardona won the Safety Award, Dianna Digiandomenico won the Jimmie Heuga Award. BACK ROW: Billy Kidd and Sigrid Noack, (both won the Jimmie Heuga Award previously). Jimmie Heuga’s two children - daughter, Kelly Hammil and son - Wilder Heuga were special guests at the 2011 FWSA Convention. photo provided by Sigrid Noack Charities & Our Communities by Sigrid Noack Charities Chair, FWSA ten were the hundreds of home-bound locals, who got special delivery boxed dinners right at their front doors. Christmas is one day the local Meals on Wheels deliveries are absent, making the turkey and fixin’s taste that much better for these shut-ins.” What a phenomenal event! Congratulations and thank you Monterey Ski & Social Club for all your wonderful charitable work. With these special recognitions, we encourage our FWSA councils and clubs to get more involved with charities and community activities. At the Annual FWSA Convention, our industry representatives and ski club delegates consistently express their amazement at the variety and the extent of volunteerism and charity support within our FWSA family. A great big thanks to all our clubs and councils who support charitable activities. You are all winners! Community Involvement Although our clubs and councils are involved with a huge number of different charity organizations, some of FWSA’s favorite charity groups are athletic groups for the mentally and physically challenged. Three of the most popular charities for our eleven FWSA councils and approximately 180 snowsports clubs are Disabled Sports USA, Special Olympics, and Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, formerly known as the Jimmie Heuga Center for MS. Special Olympics relies on dedicated volunteers to provide yearround sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympictype sports for people with mental retardation. The Special Olympics global community includes athletes, volunteers, coaches, family members and sponsors/supporters. For more information and to get involved, check out http://www.specialolympics.org. Special Olympics volunteer opportunities are available throughout our FWSA area. Disabled Sports USA (DS/USA), was founded in 1967 by disabled Vietnam veterans to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to gain self-confidence, greater independence, dignity, and mobility through sports, Continued on page 73 FWSA is headed for 100% Charity Involvement Classic; “Oscar Night" hosted by the Monterey County Film Commission, the Monterey Vintners and Growers Association’s Great Wine Escape Weekend; the Moto-GT Car Races at Laguna Seca; and the Monterey Wine Classic. In many cases, the members’ volunteering generated money, which then was donated to charitable organizations in the area. For example, at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament, the amount of money donated to charity for each volunteer’s work was more than $2,400. That’s per volunteer! Wonderful programs and there are amazingly generous and devoted people in this ski club! Doug Weaver wrote this about Monterey Ski & Social Club’s largest event of the year: “Our member efforts provided clothes, a complete turkey dinner, a festive holiday party, and Santa Claus for more than 2,000 people on Christmas Day. This event included at least 350 hours in planning, promoting, organizing, picking up, sorting, peeling, cooking, serving and cleaning up for this special dinner. The club worked together with the Shelter OutReach Plus Partnership, which provided help with logistics, office personnel, meeting space, and gave financial assistance for this huge event. The preparation and organization of finding so many donations was unbelievable! Can you imagine 125 turkeys, 25 hams, 100 pounds of potatoes, sacks of onions, veggies, stuffing, bread, desserts, utensils, forks and knives, paper plates, and napkins, five big trees to decorate, getting elementary students to decorate placemats and hanging paintings on the walls, having an all-out clothing drive, getting bags and bags of used-but-good garments from around the area, and then finding Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus to enthusiastically put the youngsters on their laps on Christmas Day, and handing out presents donated by local businesses and the Salvation Army. Local bands were asked to donate their time on Christmas Day to entertain.
