A new chairlift 1 and a high speed detachable are also planned for the future. ■ Eldora Mountain, CO. Homewood Mountain Resort’s major expansion plans to become an upscale boutique resort continued with a draft environmental impact report (EIR) filed January 2011 with Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Public comment period ended April 21, 2011 (email comments to Homewooddeiscomments@trpa.org, Jeff Cowen, TRPA Community Liaison jcowen@trpa.org 775-589-5278) and final action is possibly expected by the end of 2011. Some highlights from the EIR (preferred alternative 1) include 8-passenger high speed gondola, high speed quad and new beginner mid mountain ski lift; resort lodge/5 star boutique style hotel with 75 rooms and 70 condo units at North Base area; mid mountain day lodge and outdoor swimming pool; village center/ice skating rink at North Base area; total of 17 new buildings at North and South Base areas (155 tourist accommodation units, 181 residential units and 13 workforce/em- ployee housing units) to be built on 23 acre development using LEED gold standard. Master Development Plan approved by U.S. Forest Service in July 2011. Over the next 10-12 years, the resort plans to expand from 70 acres to 500 acres including hike to terrain; add 10 lifts, 50 trails, two new base lodges, a new skier/ boarder cross course and increase snowmaking capability. 75% of the resort’s visitors are snowboarders. www.skilasvegas.com/masterplan ■ Manitoba Mountain, AK. Sustainable ski area redevelopment project planned by Mountain Rider’s Alliance for Manitoba Mountain near Cooper Landing in Kenai Mountains of Chugach National Forest which last operated from 19411960. Three surface lifts to provide access to 1,000 acres of inbounds terrain and 10,000 acres of backcountry (descents up to 4,400 feet) and hike to terrain with estimated annual snowfall of 300-550 inches. Lift served vertical drop 2,596 feet with base elevation of 1,106 feet and top of highest surface lift at 3,702 feet. Formal application expected to be filed in October 2011 by Mountain Rider’s Alliance project manager Dave Scanlan who also conducted seven community outreach presentations. www.SkiManitobaMountain.com ■ Monarch Mountain, CO. Draft Master Development Plan (MDP) released in June 2011 proposes adding a 344 acre No Name Basin on the west side of the Continental Divide with 62 acres of cleared trails, 68 acres of gladed terrain, a fixed grip double chairlift, and a warming hut that would increase total skiable acreage to 1,144 acres. This draft MDP also includes previously approved projects such as upgrading the Breezeway lift to a fixed grip triple chairlift, various surface lifts, glading 48 acres of current terrain, mountain top lodge, mid-mountain lodge, and snowmaking capacity on 33 acres.
