Ski area expansion onto mountain’s northwest face with new chairlift and seven new ski runs on 279 acres was approved by Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission in May 2011. This decision on the expansion proposal MS2000 (launched in 2003) yielded a blended land classification for the 850 acre section known as Potential Alpine Ski Area Expansion (PASEA) with 80 acres classified as Recreation for formal ski trails, 199 acres classified as Resource Recreation for backcountry skiing, and 571 acres classified as Natural Forest Area for wildlife habitat and forest protection. Lands Council environmental group filed a law- suit in June 2011 challenging the approval process on the basis that an EIS should have been required. The ski resort only occupies about 10 percent of Mount Spokane’s 14,000 acres. Permits and additional environmental reviews are not expected to be completed until at least the summer of 2012. www.mtspokane.com/107/backside-expansion/ ■ Northstar-at-Tahoe, CA. Vail Resorts purchased Northstar from Booth Creek for $63 million in October 2010. The Northstar management and operating contract was purchased since CNL Lifestyle Properties owns the land and all improvements such as buildings, ski lifts and snowmaking infrastructure. Northstar had over 700,000 skier/snowboarder visits for the 20092010 season. Sierra-at-Tahoe was not part of the acquisition. ■ Okanogon-Wenatchee & Colville National Forests, WA. Forest Plan Revision (recreation use included in revision topics) EIS. Estimated DEIS Notice of Adjustment (NOA) expected January 2012. Decision/implementation expected June 2012/December 2013. Plan Revision Public Information Specialist Deborah Kelly dlkelly@fs.fed.us 509-826-3396 www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/forest-plan ■ Powderhorn Ski Resort, CO. Powderhorn located in Mesa, CO near Grand Junction sold in August 2011 for $1.4 million to Powderhorn Partners LLC formed by former Vail Resorts president Andy Daly and Gart brothers (Ken and Tom). Powderhorn has 1,600 skiable acres, 44 trails, a vertical drop of 1,650 feet, a summit elevation of 9,850 feet. The resort averages 75,000 skier visits annually (including about 3,000 season passholders) with a 250 inch average annual snowfall. The sale included 700 acres of development land, four ski lifts, a base lodge plus maintenance and operations buildings. www.powderhorn.com ■ Snowbird, UT. Snowbird Ski Resort Gad Valley Improvements EA. Eleven proposed projects to be completed over the next five years within Snowbird’s permitted boundary include Gad 2 upgrade to a high speed quad, adding beginner skiing terrain adjacent to the Baby Thunder area, providing night skiing from the Gadzoom chairlift and an expansion of Creekside Lodge Adaptive Sports facilities.
