IOC President Jacques Rogge said “Such events provide great entertainment for the spectators and add further youthful appeal to our already action-packed lineup of Olympic winter sports." 4th overall title from Maria Riesch of Germany (1728). She added eight FIS World Cup wins this season to reach a career total of 41 which ranks 5th all time among women and 1st all time for the U.S. list ahead of Bode Miller (32) and Phil Mahre (27). Vonn was also nominated for the 2011 Teen Choice Award for Best Female Athlete. Shaun White won the 2011 Best Male Action Sport Athlete ESPY. In January 2011 Lindsey Vonn was named U.S. Olympic Committee’s SportsWoman of the Year for 2010 - the second consecutive year Vonn has earned this honor. The last female alpine skier to achieve this USOC SportsWoman of the Year honor was Vonn’s childhood hero, Picabo Street, in 1998. Vonn is the first woman since track and field legend, Jackie Joyner Kersee, (1986-87) to win the award back-to-back. ■ Lindsey Vonn was named by the International Olympic Committee as the first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games Ambassador for the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria to be held January 13-22, 2012. Vonn said “I know the importance of strong role models. When I first met my hero, Picabo Street, it was a huge thrill and an unforgettable moment for me. She inspired me to become what I am today. If I can have even half that effect on some of the young athletes I come into contact with, it will be worth it. I’m really looking forward to it." Innsbruck 2012 is expected to attract over 1,000 top athletes aged 15-18 from about 70 countries competing in alpine (slalom and GS), cross country, freeskiing (skicross and halfpipe) nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding (halfpipe and slopestyle). Athletes will also participate in a Culture and Education Programme (CEP) with activities providing guidance on topics such as Olympic values, the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, and the prevention of sports injuries. www.innsbruck2012.com. ■ Ted Ligety, USA won a gold medal in giant slalom at the World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany in February 2011. This is the 4th World Championship GS gold medal ever for the U.S. and 2nd career World Championship medal for Ted Ligety (bronze medal in GS at Val d'Isere, France in 2009). He becomes the 6th American to win both Olympic and Worlds gold, joining Barbara-Ann Cochran, Phil Mahre, Picabo Street, Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn. Bode Miller in 2008 was the last U.S. male slalom podium and aside from Bode Miller and Ted Ligety, the last U.S. male to win a slalom podium was Felix McGrath in 1988. Over 60,000 lessons were provided to adults and children as part of this initiative which also generated over $4 million in general media coverage for snow sports. This price is a 7.5x multiple of Volcom's EBITDA (earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization). ■ U.S. Alpine Ski Team nominations for the 2011/2012 season were received in June 2011 by two of the 2010 FWSA Athletic Scholarship recipients – Keith Moffat of Berkeley, CA (C Team) and Lila Lapanja of Incline Village, NV (D Team). ■ Former all-state ski racer, Keegan Bradley, age 25, wins golf major (PGA Championship) on his first try in August 2011. Only two other golfers, Ben Curtis (2003) and Frances Ouimet (1913), have ever won a major on their first try. Locations include Yongpyong Resort (alpine skiing: slalom and giant slalom), Jungbong (alpine skiing: downhill, Super G and combined), Bokwang Phoenix Park (freestyle skiing and snowboard), and Alpensia Resort (ski jumping, nordic). Sochi, Russia is hosting the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. ■ Lindsey Vonn won Best Female Athlete ESPY (Excellence in Sport Performance Yearly) in July 2011 for the second straight year becoming the second ever back-to-back winner of Best Female Athlete ESPY (Annika Sorenstam won in 2005/2006). In 2010, Lindsey was first skier, male or female, to ever win the top ESPY Award which began in 1993 and to ever win the top AP Athlete of the Year Award which began in 1931. This is Vonn’s 4th major 2011 recognition outside of alpine skiing. She also won the 2011 Laureus World Sport Award, 2011 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Award for Favorite Female Athlete, and 2011 Preis Herbert Award (public figure who has promoted the Alps region through their work in the media). These awards cap the 2011 season where Lindsey captured the following FIS Alpine World Cup season long titles: 4th downhill title, 3rd Super G title, 2nd super combined title, and was only three points (1725) from winning her Far West Skier’s Guide 2O11 - 2O12 ▼▼▼▼▼
