Far West Skier's Guide 2011-2012 - (Page 66)

Heavenly photo courtesy of Vail Resorts Central Council of California by Fran Long, President Councils serve different purposes for different clubs. Large clubs often have their own travel programs, insurance, etc. and feel they really don’t need councils. Smaller clubs rely on their councils more heavily for travel options, weekend ski trips, etc. For all clubs, councils offer information and options. The individual clubs choose how much of the information filters down to their members, and how many of those options they want made available to the membership. At a minimum, most clubs offer their members the benefits made available by the council, Far West Ski Association, and the National Ski Council Federation. If you are a club member, and you haven’t heard about the benefits and options available to you, inquire at your next meeting, or contact your council president or membership person directly. Central Council is typical of many councils throughout the western United States. The council serves both large and small clubs throughout the central California area. The larger clubs in Santa Barbara, Fresno, and San Luis Obispo have excellent ski travel programs and a variety of summer options available to their members. For those clubs, Central Council is a broker of information, with a few members from each of those areas opting for a council or FWSA trip in addition to what their club is offering. The smaller clubs in Bakersfield, Exeter, and Salinas rely on council and FWSA organized ski and travel programs more heavily. Central Council sponsors four main events every year. An early weekend of skiing at Mammoth Mountain kicks off the ski season each year. The council also sponsors the FWSA North American Ski Week held the end of January or first of February each year. In addition, there are two council-sponsored summer events: a camping weekend and leisurely float trip, and a fun-filled, fund raising weekend at the Salinas Air Show. With only six clubs, we are a small council where it is easy to get to know everyone. Check us out as a stranger and plan to leave with many life-long friends. Basic information is located on the website: www.centralcouncilskiclubs.org, and more detailed information can be received by contacting those in charge of the events you will find on the website. 66 Rest and relax in the warm Utah sun. photo courtesy of the Park City Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau Nordic skiing is available at Mammoth’s Tamarack Cross Country Resort photo courtesy of Mammoth Mountain Central Council of California www.centralcouncilskiclubs.org President: Fran Long 805-238-1375 fancat2007@sbcglobal.net CENTRAL COUNCIL OF CALIFORNIA Central Council of California Member Clubs and Contact Information AVALANCHE SKI AND SPORTS CLUB Serving Bakersfield, Kern County Website: www.centralcouncilskiclubs.org Contact: Donna Barnes, President dbarnes@bakersfieldcity.us Club Hotline: N/A CAMBER SKI CLUB Serving the Salinas Valley, Monterey County Website: www.centralcouncilskiclubs.org Contact: Jayne Camic, Ski Trips/ Activities Director camicski@aol.com Club Hotline: 831-443-8435 FRESNO SKI CLUB Serving Fresno County Website: www.fresnoskiclub.com Contact: Scott Knutson, President president@fresnoskiclub.com Club Hotline: info@fresnoskiclub.com SANTA BARBARA SKI AND SPORTS CLUB Serving Santa Barbara County Website: www.sbski.org Contact: Dennis Forster, President president@sbski.org Club Hotline: 805-895-9697 SLO SKIERS A Ski Sport and Social Club Serving San Luis Obispo, Southern Monterey, and Northern Santa Barbara Counties Website: www.sloskiers.org Contact: Hal Rosewall, President president@sloskiers.org Banff National Park is home to Mt.
