Clubs, Councils & Families Come Together By Fran Long Youth & Family Involvement Chair, FWSA The First Annual Summer Adventure Trip to Mammoth Mountain was enjoyed by all who attended. Camp or condos: there is plenty to do for the entire family. Next summer, the trip will be extended to a full week, since there is so much to do in the summer at the resorts. If you can’t make it for the entire week, come during the days you can. photos provided by Fran Long Inland Council by Wayne Stolfus, V. P. - Travel Inland Council was formed in 1971. The council currently represents three ski clubs from the Inland Empire region of Southern California. Its affiliated clubs actively promote a variety of recreational opportunities for nonskiers, skiers, and snowboaders. Clubs schedule trips to Mammoth Mountain and Lake Tahoe during the ski season, plus outings throughout the year including water ski trips, kayaking, bike rides, social gatherings, barbecues, and more. We welcome volunteers to help organize and run our club and council programs. If you have any interest, please contact Wayne Stolfus. The racers from Inland Council will participate this year by attending the race weekends and events at Mammoth Mountain sponsored by Rokka and Schusski leagues. Some of our racers will also participate in the races offered by Sierra and Open Leagues in the Lake Tahoe area. In addition, racers will be part of the SoCal Championships in March and the Far West Racing Championships in April at Mammoth Mountain. This last year, Sitzmarkers Ski & Social Club attended the great FWSA 2011 Ski Week at Sun Valley with a group of their associate members from the Milwaukee Sitzmarker Ski Club, and they plan to participate at the 2012 FWSA Ski Week in Jackson Hole. We look forward to another exciting week with lots of activities, parties, racing, and exceptional skiing. Club members have also attended and enjoyed many FWSA International trips. The First Annual Mammoth Mountain Summer Adventure was held July 21-24, 2011, and what an adventure it was! The trip was small this year, with sixteen participants from the central valley and coast of California. The adventure kicked off with a welcome pizza party Thursday evening and was non-stop for the next three days. Activities included a just-for-fun fishing derby, BBQ picnic by Lake Mary, evening social and evening pot luck dinner with campfire, bike riding (both mountain and road rides), kayaking, hiking, sight seeing, and a little time to relax by the pool. All sixteen participants agreed that there are just too many adventures to be had at Mammoth in the summer for a three day trip, so next year’s adventure will be extended to a full week, a different adventure each day. Planning is already in the works, and dates and details will be posted on the FWSA website as soon as they are available. If you can’t spare a full week, consider a partial adventure instead. Pick your adventures and come for a day or two, or…. FWSA encourages youth and family involvement in both its winter and summer travel and activity plans. Each year, a few families take their children on the FWSA North American Ski Week and on the International Ski Week trips. This is sometimes difficult for families because children are in school during ski season. The summer adventure is intended to offer families another venue for involvement during a time when children are not in school. We look forward to seeing many of our families on next year’s adventure. Experience Mammoth Mountain in the summer. Join other FWSA members on the Second Annual Summer Adventure in July, 2012. 67 Far West Skier’s Guide 2O11 - 2O12 http://www.fwsa.org http://www.sitzmarkers.com
