San Diego Council of Ski Clubs by Eileen Sanford, President San Diego Council of Ski Clubs consists of ten ski/snowboard clubs representing the varied skiers and snowboarders of San Diego County. The San Diego Alpine Race League is also continuing to promote recreational skiing and snowboard racing amongst the people in the San Diego area. The SDCSC won the SoCal Championships this year at Mammoth Mountain. Our clubs enjoy a variety of ski trips each year from Big Bear Mountain to Mammoth to trips to destination resorts. In 2010-11, we had ski trips to Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Sun Valley, Mammoth and Big Bear. In 2011-12, we will be returning to Aspen and going to Jackson Hole and Austria/Germany/ Prague for two bike and boat trips coordinated by Holidaze Ski Tours. Summertime around the clubs is always busy. Many of the clubs move their meetings outdoors for the season. Members enjoy getting together for Padre games, museum tours, biking, hiking, tennis, horse races at Del Mar, bunco parties, and the Summer Pops concerts. The San Diego Council of Ski Clubs has always supported many charities, such as the Jimmie Heuga Center for MS, the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Special Olympics, United States Adaptive Recreation Center, Youth Sports Mentoring Organization and Toys for Tots. This year, SDCSC was recognized at the FWSA Convention as one of two councils that had “almost 100%” participation from each club. Three SDCSC clubs were recognized as having outstanding Charity Programs: Torrey Pines Ski Club, Action Ski and Snowsports Club and Get Off Your Rockers Ski Club. 78 LEFT: The Michael German Memorial Golf Tournament, named after a very special San Diego Council member, is a huge part of the FWSA Annual Convention. photo by David Cooper / Bad Boy’z Photography ABOVE: Ah, for the Good Ol’ Days! SDCSC Ski Week participants have a little fifties fun. San Diego Council ran two European bike and boat trips in the fall of 2011. Eileen and Mike fit in well with their spankin’ new Lederhosen. SAN DIEGO COUNCIL OF SKI CLUBS At the FWSA Convention, Pacific Rim Alliance won all three events in their category. The events were: Outstanding Club, Website and Newsletter. NIS won second place in Website, Newsletter and Outstanding Club. Action won third place in the website competition. San Diego Ski Club won the History Award. Their entry was submitted by Erin Barber. Thanks to all the clubs for their hard work this past year. The official start of the ski season begins with our Gala on November 5, organized by Barbara Blasé German, Jean McCasey and Judy Schultheis. The event will be held at 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant. The evening will honor our SDCSC Man and Woman of the Year, and the Joe Harris Award winner for longtime service to skiing and snowsports. The 2010 winners - Laura Meldrum and Joe Goldhammer - will host the contest for the 2011 winners. We would like to thank Vail Resorts for sponsoring the band for us this year. We would also like to thank Aspen/ Snowmass and Telluride Ski Resorts for becoming Gold Members of our council and sponsoring our Gala Program. A special thanks to Catherine Ohl who designed and produced the program. The SDCSC will volunteer to work at Snow Jam which will be held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, November 11-13. This is a great opportunity to earn money to support our race team. The SD Alpine League will have a busy race schedule this year. We are planning to send 36 members to FWSA Ski Week in Jackson Hole from January 28-February 4, 2012. We are also planning to send 42 members to the SDCSC Aspen trip from December 7-13, 2011. This is the 15th Annual council trip to Aspen organized by Ski.Com tour operators. We were excited to participate in our first SDCSC European bike and boat trip down the Danube River thru Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungry. It was held in September, and included three days in Munich for Oktoberfest and visiting castles. This trip was led by Hobe Schroeder. The second bike and boat trip, lead by Eileen Sanford and coordinated by Holidaze Ski Tours, was held in October. See our website for details. We have been honored to sponsor a Jr. 2 Racer for the FWSA Athletic Scholarship Foundation. Her name is Alexa Wehsener. She is from San Diego and trains at Mammoth. Alexa and her family attended our Annual Appreciation Dinner on May 4. The council was proud to present her with a check for $350 to be applied toward her race fees. She will also be receiving $500 from the council for the next three years. We were delighted to attend the 79th Annual FWSA Convention at the Pacific Palms Hotel & Conference Center. It was a great success. Thanks for a job well done. For more information about the SDCSC visit our website at: www.skisandiego.org and join us for a great year.
