Speaking of his boyhood home, Arthur remarked in a 1963 article for Woman’s Day magazine: “We never had a Christmas tree as such.” So the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is done up for the holidays as it might have looked at any point through the early 20th century. Natural embellishments abound, so that red and green with some white accents are the colors, in keeping with period traditions. Arthur describes his and his brother’s holiday forays for mistletoe, whose gathering required climbing trees to collect. And holly. “[W]e were content with samp or Florida holly,” he recalls, “whose red berries were just as gay and perhaps more appropriate to a Low-Country Christmas.” The house is decorated for Christmas in keeping with those traditions. This year, the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace will welcome Girl Scout Brownies and Girl Scouts with these same special programs on Dec. 3, 4 and 10. The house also will be open for Pine Boughs and Holly at 6:45 on Dec. 17. This program is divided into time slots, each limited to 20 participants, who will be able to do an in-depth tour of the house with its decorations and glowing candlelight. Guides and docents will wear period costumes and discuss period Christmas traditions. And participants will gather in the parlor to sing carols and celebrate Christmas as it was in the Victorian era.
