Women caring for women Certified nurse midwives at Lakewood Hospital provide extra support to delivering moms Once a woman discovers she is pregnant, there are many thoughts, emotions and decisions that need to be addressed. While a newly expectant mom is undoubtedly excited, she may feel anxious because of the many important decisions she will face during the next few months. The First Decision A woman must choose an appropriate obstetric healthcare provider to care for her and the unborn child throughout the pregnancy, labor and delivery. It is a very personal choice, and it is wise and beneficial for the expectant mother to research the options available for her care. Obstetrics and gynecology (ob/gyn) physicians specialize in women’s healthcare. They diagnose and treat disorders of the female reproductive system as well as monitor the care of expectant moms and perform the baby’s delivery. In addition to having an ob/gyn, a mom-to-be will want to consider having a certified nurse midwife (CNM). What Midwives Do CNMs are licensed healthcare practitioners educated in nursing and midwifery. Midwives provide women with a personalized, compassionate and total approach to all aspects of health, including prenatal, labor, delivery, postpartum and gynecologic care. Their medical knowledge and specialized training allow them to have a unique understanding of a woman’s physical, emotional and personal needs during all phases of pregnancy. “The true meaning of midwifery is women caring for women,” says Joy Sedlock, CNM. The focus of a midwife is to meet the individual needs of each patient in order to provide the most fulfilling birthing experience, she notes. “Your midwife wants nothing more than for you to have a wonderful experience delivering your baby, and she will provide the comprehensive care and support needed to make that happen,” Sedlock explains. Additionally, a midwife will remain with you throughout your labor and delivery and will have a good understanding of what the mother needs when and can successfully get her to the point of pushing and delivery. If a problem arises, a board-certified obstetrician is always on hand to help, along with the team of experts just minutes away at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Fairview Hospital.
