Risky Business A scary statistic: Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die of pregnancy-related complications, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Ofﬁce on Women’s Health. “Preconception health and prenatal care is important for women of all races,” says Rebecca N. Starck, MD, chair of Regional Ob/Gyn, Cleveland Clinic. “Some individuals are at higher risk due to genetic risks and personal health risks, but the majority of women can expect a normal pregnancy with a healthy outcome. Scheduling regular appointments with your ob/gyn provider can optimize your health and the health of your baby. “For most women, pregnancy is a relatively normal process that we can optimize with healthy eating and common-sense care,” Dr. Starck assures.
