and Sports Illustrated, and advertising campaigns for Victoria’s Secret, J.Crew, Ralph Lauren and Express. For this issue, he took one of his favorite models, Floridaborn Heide Lindgren, to Naples, Fla., to create a portfolio of chic beachside American style (“American Riviera,” page 92). “I had arrived from Paris, to this small Florida town, and I have to say I was equally excited to be in both,” he recalls. “For me, if I haven’t taken a picture of it, it really hasn’t happened. I have a strange compulsion to visually record everything.” It was his first time in Naples, and he arrived with an artist’s sense of completion. “My fantasy of how people should dress and look when they’re on vacation and staying at nice hotels is perhaps a little distant from reality but, for me, it’s a feeling — a feeling of I want to be there, to be that person, to have that life. A bit of lust and envy too.” STAIRWAY TO HE AVEN This page: Visitors climb the 272 steps to the Batu Caves, a series of three giant caverns housing Hindu shrines. Ever since my daughter was born four years ago, I’ve considered the term “family vacation” to be an oxymoron. If “vacation” suggests calm, escape, relaxation — a jailbreak from the everyday — then taking your kid along would seem to defeat the purpose. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy going away with Annelise: It was a pleasure to walk hand in hand with her through the Tuileries, a delight to go shell hunting together off the frigid coast of Maine. It’s just that going away invariably involves so much … schlepping. Have you ever had to carry a 30-pound child, a 20-pound stroller, and four bags of food, books, toys and souvenirs onto the Paris Metro? I have. It isn’t fun. That is why, the next time my wife, Joanna, suggested we head out of town for a short weekend, I was armed with a suggestion that would minimize our need to play Sherpa and maximize our ability to lounge: Palm Beach, Fla. For years, that razor-thin, semitropical barrier island has served in my imagination as the very symbol of blissful remove. I’m hardly alone in this, of course.
