TRE A SURE TROVE From left: The Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos; the Galería Patricia Ready; the Inmaculada Concepción Sanctuary at the top of the San Cristóbal Hill; an outdoor cafe in the Lastarria-Santa Luc ía neighborhood. Nearby, the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center, known as GAM, is riddled with history. Inaugurated in 1971 for a U.N. conference, GAM was intended to become a cultural center and for a spell housed the defense ministry. In 2007 it was gutted by fire and came back to life in 2010 with a handsome façade of glass and rusted Cor-Ten steel, 236,806 square feet of rehearsal and performance space, a library and two visual arts galleries, all of which seem determined to put the past to rest. A bit farther down the Alameda, in the older neighborhoods where Santiago’s elite once lived, a graceful mansion on Avenida República contains the curious, marvelous Museo de la Solidaridad, established in 1971 with a small collection of some 400 pieces. There are now more than 2,800 paintings, sculptures, etchings, drawings, tapestries and photographs. In the luminous interior of its main hall are works by Frank Stella, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Victor Vasarely. On Avenida Recoleta, the sweet Museo de Artes Decorativas, so redolent of Spain with its pristine, ancient library of 30,000 tomes and Dominican convent next door, offers a burst of beauty. So, too, does the neoclassical Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in nearby Parque Forestal, with its dazzling glass dome and works by Chilean and European artists. Five minutes away by bike, in the neighborhood of Bellavista, sits La Chascona, a charming three-level home hidden in the hills that Pablo Neruda built for his lover (and, later, third wife) Matilde Urrutia, whom he affectionately called “la chascona” for her tumble of auburn hair. With three bars, a handful of Fornasetti pieces and collections of curiosities — from African busts to Portuguese goblets — this nautically inspired abode is an absolute delight, still exuding creativity and joy. For a taste of Santiago’s current art scene, two downtown galleries, AFA and Plop!, are a breath of fresh air. On Calle Merced, Galería Plop! has a tiny exhibition space and store selling books, prints and original works by Chile’s prolific and talented community of comic-strip illustrators and graphic artists. Farther down Merced, on the second floor of a building on Pasaje Phillips, Galería AFA represents a roster of contemporary visual artists and photographers cultivated by the enterprising women behind Ch.ACO, the three-year-old art fair that has put Santiago on the international art map. A taxi (or challenging bicycle) ride up to the neighborhood of Vitacura is a voyage to another galaxy: tree-lined streets with stores selling gourmet marmalade, posh baby clothes and European kitchen appliances.
