T H E w E D D I N g TOA sT the wedding toast is steeped in tradition — dating back to ancient greece — but it often lacks the finesse of its heritage. Unbearable rambling, uncomfortable humor and uneasy speakers are all too common. yet proper toasting decorum is relatively simple to achieve. Peter Post, a director of the emily Post institute and author of five etiquette books, including “a wedding like no other,” says it is acceptable to borrow a quote, piece of literature or a sample toast from the web for the night. if in doubt, Post says, credit the source of your material with a casual mention. “what’s most important is that the sentiment of what’s said is honest and sincere; that’s what people are interested in and respond to.” successful toasts to the bride and groom come from the heart and follow four simple rules. ◗ Don’t Wing it ExpERT ADvICE: 1.
