For The ritz-Carlton, sarasota, it meant careful planning and a lot of creativity. For one wedding ceremony, the couple walked beneath bare trees brought in and painstakingly decorated with acrylic to resemble ice. blue lighting furthered the wintry look, with bunches of white rosebuds standing in for snow. sTaTi on To sTaT ion a growing trend among the betrothed: getting guests out of their seats and moving. to that end, chef stations are becoming more popular. wedding guests forgo sit-down dinners, instead sampling from foods arranged at different selfcontained stations. the ritz-carlton, Phoenix took this one step further recently, placing a fire pit inside the property’s rooftop pool to create a “fire and ice station.” there, bartenders poured sake shooters through dragon-shaped ice luges at either end of the pool. an asian theme was continued through the chef stations that dotted the rooftop, where different types of sushi and teppanyaki were served. D r eam D re ss e s the ritz-carlton, Berlin has teamed with renowned design house Kaviar Gauche to create the haute couture “Dress of Dreams Experience” in which brides receive custom fittings for their one-of-a-kind dress during an overnight stay at the hotel. The stay also includes champagne toasts and a three-course dinner at the hotel’s French brasserie Desbrosses. We asked designer Alexandra Fischer-Roehler of Kaviar Gauche about the art of designing wedding gowns. Where do you get your inspiration when designing dresses? From differ- ent sources. It can be a book with a fascinating female protagonist in it ... an image that comes to mind as we read. Occasionally from film or music. And, of course, through encounters. Encounters with exceptional people. How do you go about taking that inspiration and applying it to design? It’s like going on a journey. At first, the design consists only of fragments. We discuss each [fragment], sketch, change, experiment. It’s a process which can take a long time. It’s important to get the details, the cut and the material right. They have to be in perfect harmony. What’s your design process? It depends — for some designs, we make the patterns first and then we look at how it works on the real body. Or, we make drapings first and after that we define the look. It’s then more like a work in progress. But both [techniques] are quite inspiring! are there specific trends these days in bridal wear? Things have become much more liberal, and brides are more willing to experiment. But what matters most is quality.
