Willis A We celebrate our accomplishments, and anticipate the future of healthcare Vim & Vigor Managing editor Aaron McKevitt Vim & Vigor Assistant Managing editor Lisa L. Stauffer s we begin to wind down yet another year, I want to celebrate our accomplishments, due largely in part to our physician excellence and valued local support. GMC was busy transforming healthcare for our community throughout 2011, and here are some of the highlights: We reached a significant milestone in February when we performed our first percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI, the formal name for coronary angioplasty and stenting. In March, the Center for Surgical Weight Management celebrated its first anniversary and the dozens of people who have improved their health and changed their lives through this program. Our Gwinnett Women’s Pavilion celebrated its 20th year of serving our community in April by dedicating a new neonatal intensive care unit ambulance, furthering our services to meet the needs of our most fragile patients. This past fall, the Gwinnett Breast Center at GMC–Lawrenceville opened, leveraging oncology, women’s services and imaging resources to deliver greater results for our patients. The center, located at the Gwinnett Physician Center (631 Building) and home to both the Marion Allison Webb Center for Screening Mammography and the Sandra J. Strickland Diagnostic Center, uses fully digital equipment in the fight against breast cancer. Because of our reputation for clinical excellence in the field of cardiac care, 11Alive (NBC’s Atlanta affiliate) asked our cardiologists in July to begin regularly appearing to provide heart-health advice to its audiences in Atlanta and all of northern Georgia. Though my focus has been to spotlight what we have accomplished over the past year, I would be remiss not to mention what we will open in just a couple of months: the Heart & Vascular Center at GMC–Lawrenceville. Construction of the state-of-the-art facility is in its final stages. Once complete, it will house our experienced cardiovascular physicians and clinicians who have trained and worked at some of the nation’s leading institutions. We look forward to our first open heart surgery in early 2012. Looking back at all that we’ve done over the past year, and a bit at what will come in 2012, I can’t help but be excited for how we will continue to transform healthcare in the coming year. editorial Board Kelli Massey Amy Motteram Keyonda Noel Beth Okun Dolores Ware Callen Womack PrOductiOn V.P./Strategic Content: Beth Tomkiw Editor-in-Chief: Shelley Flannery Editors: Sam Mittelsteadt, Matt Morgan, Amanda Myers, Ellen Olson, Tom Weede Copy Editor: C.J.
