Get Help ging Better A CLUE: A KNEE BRACE WHAT IT MEANS: Previous injuries don’t stop Harmon from getting his workout on. It wasn’t just awards he left college football with; he has an abducted knee, caused by an on-the-field injury. It means his knee has moved outward from the midline of the body, causing a knock-kneed effect. Add to this a shoulder that reportedly has been broken twice during two separate filming incidents. Certified personal trainer Michael Marsico, a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, says that if he were training Harmon, he’d treat him the same way he would a 20-year-old: by using functional training. “It’s not discriminatory. Anybody at any skill or fitness level can do it,” he says. Functional training means creating exercises to strengthen muscles you use daily. The exercises mimic everyday life movements, such as picking up a child. Copy this in the gym by lifting a medicine ball or kettlebell in the same fashion, Marsico says. “You’re incorporating the back, glutes and shoulder muscles,” he adds. “So you create exercises to teach those muscles how to work together at the same time.” To treat injuries that happened a long time ago, like Harmon’s knee, Marsico says he would also recommend balance exercises on a Bosu ball, working up to squats. “Balance exercises are also essential for seniors, even if they don’t have a knee problem like Mark,” Marsico says. “This type of preventive medicine is invaluable.” ter s are aging bet iou s American onsc can help. mon, health-c eTime Health Like M ark H ar Center’s Prim al er. innet t Medic es 50 and old than ever.
