Find out Where You Fit in Serving the Community through gmC Shafer spent 12 years on the board of Gwinnett Medical Center. “General Glancy did a good thing in getting the hospital started,” he says. “It was a humble little place. A friend was born there and I think all the doctor’s and other fees came to $90.” As a board member, Shafer was instrumental in bringing Charles Sikes in as administrator of the hospital in 1971. “I had known Charles since I was 10 or 12 years old. I talked to the other members of the board and said he’s a native and he’ll do a good job. And he did,” Shafer recalls. “I feel like Charles made a lot of improvements while he was here. “A good hospital is more important to the county than just about anything,” Shafer continues. “We’ve come a long way. We’ve got a good hospital and it deserves the support of the rest of the county.” Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation president Jason Chandler with longtime supporter Joseph Shafer “Gwinnett used to be a sleepy little county,” Shafer says. “We asked for growth, and we got it. To me, it’s important that Gwinnett Medical Center continue to grow, to keep up.” And GMC will continue to grow, thanks to community-minded supporters like Joseph Shafer. enSuring Future growth In addition to serving on the board, Shafer has taken steps to ensure that GMC will continue to grow. As part of his estate plans, he has designated the GMC Foundation as beneficiary to receive an investment account, worth $1.6 million, after his death.
