GLAnCy REhAbILITATIOn CEnTER Stroke, traumatic brain injury and neurological disorders are among the most difficult conditions to rehabilitate, as they affect so many different aspects of living. Movement, cognition, depth perception, voice and speech all can be affected. Glancy Rehabilitation Center, one of the nation’s premier specialty rehabilitation centers for both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, is in downtown Duluth. The program has earned the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). In addition, Glancy has earned CARF accreditation as a stroke specialty program. “With sports and many other therapies, the goal is to restore function to a particular part of the body,” says Mona Lippitt, CTRS, director of rehabilitation at Glancy Rehabilitation Center. “With stroke, traumatic brain injury and certain neurological conditions, the whole body is affected. Our program provides an interdisciplinary approach with multiple professionals all working to progress the patient toward restorative goals.” Glancy was designed with the needs of real people in mind. Therapy is readily accessible on the ground floor. The gym is lit with an abundance of natural light. And there is an outdoor patio space for therapy on different surfaces, including wood, gravel and brick. “We also have a full-fledged therapeutic recreation program,” says Katrina Stone, M.A., quality coordinator at GMC–Duluth. Glancy Rehabilitation Center “Patients develop skills through is designed with the needs and recreational activities like gargoals of real people in mind. dening, and therapists help them figure out how to navigate community situations like reaching items in a grocery store, opening a non-automatic door or getting onto the sidewalk when there’s no handicapped ramp.” Gwinnett Extended Care Center at GMC–Lawrenceville When You Need Extended Care One of the gems at GMC–Lawrenceville is the Gwinnett Extended Care Center (GECC), designed as a temporary residence for patients who no longer need acute care but are not quite ready to go home, and also as a long-term-care facility for permanent residents. Although many long-term-care facilities occasionally offer rehabilitation therapies, Gwinnett Extended Care Center has full-time staff in-house to work with residents on physical, occupational and speech therapy. “In addition,” says Tamey Stith, administrator of GECC, “we screen each resident for participation in a restorative nursing program, designed to help each person maintain his or her highest level of function through a variety of activities including ambulation, group exercise classes and range-ofmotion exercises.” ThE nExT STEp “Graduates” of GMC’s Gwinnett SportsRehab and Glancy Rehabilitation Center can pay a nominal fee and continue to exercise at the center. “While the therapists aren’t working one-on-one with these graduates,” Hoover says, “they’re in the room and can answer specific questions. And they’re using equipment that they’re familiar with.” Stone adds: “A lot of our traumatic brain injury and stroke survivors aren’t comfortable in a regular gym. Coming back here to exercise encourages social interaction and reentry into the community, which is part of rehabilitation, too.” Vim & Vigor • SPRI NG 2012 OnLInE Read Up on Rehab To learn more, visit gwinnettmedicalcenter.org/ rehabilitation. 51 http://www.gwinnettmedicalcenter.org/rehabilitation http://www.gwinnettmedicalcenter.org/rehabilitation
