They even talk about their injuries and subsequent surgeries by Jesse Seidman, M.D., an orthopedic and sports medicine physician, as if those events were part of a tennis match. “For us, tennis is a nice family sport,” Theo says. “I used to play golf, but it’s not a family sport. Tennis doesn’t take up as much time.” “Or cost as much,” Ronél adds. “The nice thing about tennis is that you can continue to play it as you age. Even if there are physical changes, the skills don’t change.” Natives of South Africa, and American citizens since April 2011, the Willemses moved to the U.S. with their two children in 1998. After a short stay in Tallahassee, Fla., they moved to Duluth. Theo works as a computer consultant for Software AG, and Ronél is an independent seamstress for interior designers. “In Tallahassee, it was often too hot to play tennis,” Ronél says. “Here in Georgia, we play year-round, with both ALTA and USTA. In the summer, between matches and practice, I play nearly every day.” With such dedication to tennis, it’s no wonder their catalog of surgeries sounds like a match recap.
