1 When I was a child I dreamed of being a ballerina. I would open up the Golden Book Encyclopedia to “ballet” and practice the poses, but I never took a dance lesson until I took disco lessons at Emory in the ’70s. Jan Rea, M.D. In her own words 2 My first job was assistant office manager at Jack’s Cookie Co. in Charlotte, N.C. I made $75 for a 40-hour week. My worst job was as a salad bar girl at Quincy’s restaurant in Charlotte. It was the summer before I started medical school and I needed the money. Dad thought it was good because it would make me humble before going off to medical school. 3 I realized I wanted to be a doctor when I became active in Medical Explorers in high school while my mother, who had type 1 diabetes, was suffering from a lot of medical problems. 4 If I weren’t a doctor I’d be an antiques dealer. 5 My inspiration is my dad, Lee Rea. He taught me the value of hard work and integrity. 6 To unwind after a long day I swim laps at the Y or take a yoga class. 7 If a movie were made about me, I would be played by Holly Hunter. 8 One thing people may not know about me is I still hang out our clothes on a clothesline. It saves energy, saves money and gives me a moment of solitude. 9 My first car was a 1985 Toyota Corolla sedan. I purchased it as a first-year resident in Gainesville, Fla., on my own. 10 My favorite holiday tradition is celebrating Thanksgiving dinner at the Rea “shed” in Charlotte, including three generations and more than 100 members of my extended family.
