A Founding Father Frederic R. Bigelow was a man who got things done. He helped grow St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. into what would become The St. Paul Companies and later Travelers Insurance, and he helped start the local precursor to United Way. In 1946, he left one final legacy: His stock was used to create the F. R. Bigelow Foundation to “promote the wellbeing of mankind.” That’s a vision it has certainly achieved, granting more than $135 million to Saint Paul–area nonprofits since 1946. frbigelow.org great giving A Slice of the Pie Every year, Mardag Foundation awards grants At-risk Families and Children 63% Supporting Seniors to Live Independently 18% to dozens of worthy nonprofits in Minnesota. Here’s a peek at great 2011 grants in Mardag’s four priority areas (see mardag.org for more): At-risk Families and Children: $10,000 was granted to Children’s Dental Services’ program to expand dental services on the Iron Range. Supporting Seniors to Live Independently: $19,000 went to the Lao Family Community of Minnesota’s Out and About program, which provides essential services to Hmong seniors. Arts and Humanities: $11,356 went to the Minnesota Museum of American Art’s CuratorKids program to bring artwork to public schools.
