By Emily Sohn By Emily Sohn Minnesota is full of environmental success stories, from the voter-supported Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment in 2008 to Minneapolis’s distinction this year as the most bike-friendly city in the country. But there are still plenty of threats as well. Forty percent of the tested waterways in the Land of 10,000 Lakes are too contaminated for safe fishing or swimming, according to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. And the state faces multiple challenges related to wildlife, transportation and urban development. Of course, a state that covers 50 million acres and is home to more than 5 million M N SIGHTS FA L L I 2011 people cannot take care of its land, air and water on its own—it needs our help. So Minnesota Philanthropy Partners teamed with Philanthropedia to conduct a survey asking many of the state’s environmental experts to recommend local nonprofits that are having significant impact on this issue. Each of the 18 recognized nonprofits has a slightly different focus, but all of them could use a little extra help—including donations. If you’re wondering how you can protect Minnesota’s natural environment, here are some groups to consider. 9
