In Southern California, a master bath personalizes nature
Serene, open yet intimate, this honorable mention offers the perfect escape for a couple in Southern California. Conceived by Lena Brion, president and CEO of Brion Design, as part of a whole-house remodel, this 11-ft. 6-in. x 14-ft. 5-in. master bath is as personal as it is practical and applies a palette of natural materials to an elegant, free-flowing space that blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. A highlight of the room, and a client request, is a sculptural freestanding tub oriented toward folding glass doors that connect to an exterior patio. Here, the wife can enjoy views of the sunset or an evening fire while relaxing in a deep soak. Incorporating the tub, noted Brion, required adding much-needed square footage, as “the existing bathroom only had space for a shower.” To make more room, a closet and hallway, as well as an adjacent area, were “absorbed,” and two exterior walls were extended several feet by the architect. Dramatically framing the tub, a feature wall separates the shower/ steam room from the rest of the bathroom and is clad on both sides with darkly veined granite. To offset its cool green tones, Brion chose verticalgrain golden ash veneers for a large vanity and a series of wall panels concealing ample storage, a walk-in closet and a toilet room. Underfoot, slate flooring, used elsewhere in the home and continued onto the patio, visually anchors the space while establishing a sense of continuity. All combine to prove getting away can be as easy as opening the door to a new master bath. n
