itts St. Kitts You don’t hear much about St. Kitts in comparison with too many other Caribbean islands like Jamaica and The Bahamas, but that’s not due to any lack of appeal on the island’s part. More likely, it’s the result of the laid-back, humble nature of its people, locals who are as happy to share their home with visitors as they are with the slow pace of their lives. Most resorts here are boutique, family-owned properties, many housed in historic structures like plantation greathouses. The one exception is the St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino, set right on the beach and near what’s known as “The Strip,” a line of bars set right on the sand. By day, The Strip is as low-key as you can get—visitors can saunter up, order a drink, and spend an entire day laying on the sand. But by night, locals and tourists alike gather at The Strip for live music, dancing, impromptu games of beach volleyball and an all-around rowdier atmosphere. Don’t stay out too late, though, as it would be a shame to miss a ziplining excursion through the St. Kitts rainforest, or historical sights like Brimstone Hill Frotress, a UNESCO World Heritage site built over the course of a century, emerging as a fully formed military base in the 1790s. At the St. Kitts Sugar Factory and Compound, visitors can witness the island’s more recent history, which once depended upon the production and export of sugar. Day trips to St. Kitts’ sister island, Nevis, are also popular. It’s an even quieter island, anchored by the ultra-luxe Four Seasons Nevis and the attached Robert Trent Jones II golf course. Nevis’ dormant volcano provides ample hiking opportunities, with some trails leading through ruins of plantations and offering scenic views out to sea. Naturally, the area surrounding the mountains is one of the island’s most populous, including the Creole town of Soufriere. Ambitious hikers only need apply to climb the trails that lead to the top of Gros Piton and Petit Piton. Other travelers will have to satisfy themselves with a trip to the drive-in volcano that’s embedded in one of the neighboring slopes, or the nearby sulphur springs, said to have healing and anti-aging properties. There’s also excellent snorkeling at the waters that form the base of the mountains, making the surrounding reefs some of the most picturesque from both above and below the waves. This region is also home to some of the Caribbean’s most upscale and unusual resorts, including Jade Mountain and Ladera, both of which boast accommodations with only three walls—the fourth has been replaced with a floor-toceiling opening that looks out to the mountains and sea beyond. On Saint Lucia’s north side, Rodney Bay is the most tourist-friendly area, composed of boutique hotels and casual bars and restaurants that light up on weekend nights. Not far from here, Pigeon Island National Park combines nature and history on a 40-acre islet. Visitors here can explore an 18th century fort built by the British that faces the island of Martinique. Once it was intended to fend off attacks by French colonialists. Today, it’s a picturesque and historic site for exploring, surrounded by well-manicured lawns ideal for picnics. It also hosts the annual Saint Lucia Jazz Festival. D30 january 2012 recommend.com http://www.stkittstourism.kn http://www.stlucianow.com http://www.recommend.com
