Opposite page: Dining at Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront. views of the river and the historic district. The menu offers tapas-style selections ranging from sandwiches and burgers to appetizers like oyster shooters, as well as a wide selection of drinks. The Bohemian Hotel itself features just 72 guestrooms, each adorned with wood, brass and leather design elements inspired by the 18th century era of maritime settlers. In some rooms, you’ll even find large chandeliers made completely out of shell, hanging above the beds. Every guestroom, as well as the lobby and other common spaces throughout the hotel, also showcase an extensive collection of artwork, a staple of the Kessler brand. From vintage couches in the lobby to unique lighting fixtures and paintings in the restaurant, each piece has a different tale to tell, much like Savannah itself. Rates at the Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront run $189-$229 per night. Our culinary adventure continues at the Mansion on Forsyth Park Hotel & Spa, a restored Victorian mansion that is also part of the Kessler Collection. Though definitely more traditional in look and feel, the Mansion on Forsyth Park still exudes an energy as chic and stylish as its sister property, the Bohemian. Located within the original portion of the historic home, which also houses an impressive art collection, including a vintage ladies’ hat collection dating back to 1860, guests will find the celebrated 700 Drayton Restaurant, a must for lunch or dinner. This elegant and romantic dining venue serves up a variety of Savannah coastal cuisine, from seafood to chophouse steaks and other local favorites. Some of our choice menu items here include the jumbo lump crab with green mango timbale and the fried green tomatoes. After dinner, guests can head up the leopard-patterned stairway to Cashmir’s Lounge where they can enjoy cocktails, live jazz and blues performances and an outdoor terrace that overlooks Forsyth Park. The 126-guestroom Mansion on Forsyth Park also features the Grand Bohemian Gallery with over 400 pieces of art, the 700 Kitchen Cooking School, the full-service Poseidon Spa and an outdoor relaxation pool. Rates run $199-$219 per night. The menu at Mrs. Wilkes’ changes daily so diners can experience something new each time they visit. Agents note that the restaurant is only open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—and there’s usually a pretty long line—so recommend clients get there early. After exploring (or devouring) the culinary delights Savannah has to offer, we’re sure your clients will have many of these dishes on the mind for days to come—this editor sure did. That’s why we recommend booking your clients a cooking lesson at the aforementioned 700 Kitchen Cooking School at Mansion on Forsyth Park. Appropriate for cooks of all levels, this culinary experience offers groups and individuals interactive classes where they’ll learn knife-handling and cooking techniques in a state-of-the-art kitchen alongside chef Darin Sehnert. One of the school’s most popular classes, Low Country Cuisine, teaches participants how to whip up dishes like black-eyed pea salad, cheddar and chive biscuits, fried green tomatoes and shrimp in red eye gravy. Classes run approximately two to three hours and start at $70 pp. other sweet treats They say you can’t leave Georgia without trying a pecan praline and for this we recommend a visit to Savannah’s Candy Kitchen, with four different locations throughout the city. Here, visitors can indulge in a huge assortment of items to satisfy even the sweetest tooth, including taffy, chocolate- and caramel-covered apples, cookies, cakes, pies and fudge. For even more sweet indulgences, tell your clients to head over to the Savannah Bee Co., which also has four locations throughout Savannah. Besides offering a large collection of specialty honey that comes in flavors like black sage, orange blossom and sourwood, the Savannah Bee Co. also offers a wide variety of indulgent body products such as beeswax hand cream, lip balm and honey bar soap. For a truly unique experience, tell your clients to head to the Wilmington Island Showroom (211 Johnny Mercer Blvd.) where they can tour the Bee Company’s bottling plant and hives. And if beer is more your client’s style, recommend they head over to Moon River Brewery Company, located directly across the street from the Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront. Complete with its own microbrewery, Moon River is a great spot for beer lovers to sample some original brews and tour the onsite brew house. Meanwhile, the restaurant serves up casual menu items like burgers, BBQ pork, garlic fries, sandwiches, soups and salads. n Archived related articles (available on recommend.com): Small Ships in the Old South (March 2011) contact information Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront: (888) 213-4024; bohemianhotelsavannah.com Mansion on Forsyth Park Hotel & Spa: (888) 213-3671; mansiononforsythpark.com august 2011 47 low country goodness When it comes to eclectic gourmet dining, Savannah offers a long list of options, each with its own special signature dishes. But when it comes to the ultimate in casual traditional Southern cuisine, it seems that the locals all have the same favorite…Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room. Set on 107 West Jones Street in Savannah’s historic district, Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room—once an old boarding house—is the ultimate place to enjoy delicious Southern home cooking. What’s neat about this restaurant is that there is no menu, guests simply walk in, grab a seat at one of several 10-person tables scattered around the main floor and enjoy delicious Southern staples like fried or barbequed chicken, macaroni and cheese, mash potatoes, black-eyed peas, okra, collard greens and corn on the cob. They can wash it all down with some sweet tea and when guests are done, they pick up their own plates and utensils and drop them in the sink at the back of the restaurant—it feels just like eating at a friend’s home. http://www.recommend.com http://agent.recommend.com/magazine-archive/march-2011/small-ships-in-the-old-south/ http://www.bohemianhotelsavannah.com http://www.mansiononforsythpark.com
